Build an Arbor

Planning and Design to Build an Arbor

If you're planning to build an arbor, no doubt you already have a design in mind, and you're simply looking for the best way to implement it. At least, we hope you have a design in mind! If you don't, set some time aside for design. It's one of the most important aspects of any kind of building, and it's essential even if you 'only' want to build an arbor. Taking time now to design your layout will save you all kinds of hassles later on. Be sure to take into account everything you would take into account if you were building something more complex; allow for good foundations, encourage it to blend naturally into the landscape, and always remember that form follows function. How large it needs to be, how many access points it has, and even the shape and structure will depend in large part on what you plan on using it for, whether it's large family gatherings or a quiet tete-a-tete with a friend.

Once you have the design worked out, it's time to look at the site itself. Keep in mind that nothing exists in a vacuum, and if you want to build an arbor, it's no exception. Look at nearby plants, and either protect or move the ones that look like they could be damaged. If you use paving stones or brick walkways in the area where you're planning to put the arbor, take the time to remove them and put them somewhere where they can stay safe. To build an arbor with the least amount of damage to the garden around it, try to work only when the ground is barely moist or nicely dry. It needn't be a dust bowl, but too much moisture in the ground when you're working tends to destroy the delicate structure of the soil and will damage your garden.

Finally, pick the materials to build an arbor carefully. Keep in mind that they should match or blend well with existing structures while still conveying a sense of your personality.
